Aurel Ciobanu-Dordea

Aurel Ciobanu-Dordea is the Director for Implementation, Governance and Semester in the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment. His previous position in the European Commission was as Director for Fundamental Rights and Union Citizenship in the Directorate-General for Justice.

He was chief negotiator for Romania’s accession to the European Union between December 1999 and January 2001, and held the post of State Secretary within the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Romania and, subsequently, was the head of European affairs in Romania. He was also the legal representative of the Government of Romania for the European Court of Human Rights and, later, for the European Court of Justice.

He studied law and has an LL.M. from the University of Illinois (US) and a Ph.D. from the University of Bucharest (Romania).
