On 1-2 December 2014, the European Environmental Bureau will celebrate forty years of environmental action by holding a thought-provoking conference that explores the environmental challenges facing Europe and the wider world in the years ahead and the opportunities for overcoming them.
December 2014 provides an especially timely moment to take stock and look at future challenges, with a new European Parliament in place, and a new European Commission and President of the European Council taking up office just before the conference. The conference also takes place in the run up to two globally important events in 2015 – the COP21 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris and the UN Summit in September 2015 that is expected to adopt a post-2015 sustainable development agenda.
The EEB conference will take a bold look at the prospects for the forty years to come and then zoom in to look at the priorities and challenges facing the new European Commission, European Parliament and Member States over the next five years. It will include provocative debates on where we need to be going and how the environmental movement can be more effective in getting there. The way in which the new Commission deals with environment will be a particular focus of discussion, in the light of President Juncker’s plans for an increased focus on growth, competitivity, jobs and better regulation.
